Lofted from their American Records deal (a mutual parting), Trouble foundquick acceptance in Europe, releasing this album months ahead of time therebefore Century Media snapped the band up stateside. Plastic Green Head(an awkward title designed to evoke both war and drugs) was self-produced andself-financed by the band before any record deal took shape, Wagner and crewconfident something would transpire, creating another hurtful sledge ofpsychedelia-inspired anachronistic doom, well up the Trouble pathways ofmetal heaven. Plastic Green Head is unfortunately a "more of the same" typespin, getting the show off to a rousing start with the carving title track,then offering the usual thick, maybe bluesier and more tentative cauldron ofhell-fried flambés, including covers of The Monkees' Porpoise Song and TheBeatles' Tomorrow Never Know, amongst such rumbling tumblers as Opium Eater and the hypnotic Another Day. If I sound less enthused, it might be thefamiliarity of it all, not to mention the record's excellent but ordinaryrecording, a bit of a cold sound after the odd but thrilling mixes of itstwo predecessors. This is still one of the best bands on the planet, but I'dhave to call Plastic Green Head my third favourite Trouble record.

When punk rock met the formless rebellion that permeated L.A.'s working-class suburbs in the early '80s, a weird hybrid was born, drawing equally from heavy-metal thunder and Ritalin-generation aggression. Suicidal Tendencies' frontman Mike Muir was one of them, and they knew it immediately, latching onto the half-spoken, half-screeched brain bomb "Institutionalized" as an instant classic. That song is certainly the best-known track on this, the group's debut, but it's hardly the only essential one: "Fascist Pig," "I Shot the Devil," and "Possessed" all rage on mightily, the arcs of guitar from Rocky George and Mike Clark serving to push Muir to new heights of blind frenzy. In less powerful hands, this album would be little more than an extended temper tantrum, but in the mitts of Suicidal, it's something far, far more dangerous.

Though this album proved a puzzling, ultimately challenging release, if nothing else, it presaged the shape of things to come in extreme music. Supernova straddles numerous music fences at one time, and indicates that metal could indeed be far more than a simple, formulaic system of chugging riffs, screamed vocals, and stampeding drums. In fact, the greatest feat of this album is its near-soundtrack aesthetic quality, making sudden left turns, detours, stylistic and volume changes at any given moment, then merging seamlessly with the next track, or cleverly conceived loop. Though its hallmarks are Steve Austin's painful Robert Fripp/Greg Ginn jazz-metal guitar playing, and frightening vocal wail -- as evidenced in "6 Dementia Satyr" and "Black Dahlia" -- it are the experimental, complex soundscapes like "Blind Man at Mystic Lake" and "The Begging" that truly set this album apart. Blut Aus Nord are a black metal band, who have begun to drift towards being post-black in more recent years. They are the solo project of French artist Vindsval. Originally, he played all instruments himself, but enlisted the aid of session musicians for later albums. After 2004, the band had two more permanent members, with GhÖst on bass and W.D. Feld on drums and keyboards/synth.Sound wise, Blut Aus Nord place a lot of importance in creating some sort of atmosphere with the music. It can be eerily haunting at times, whereas at other times it can be brutal and dissonant. The variety suits the band well, as they've made the two different black metal styles interlink nicely in their albums.The band draws inspiration from different areas, mainly black metal, but with some subtle hints of industrial and gothic metal included. Their sound has also varied from album to album. They've developed from a Burzum-esque sound with their first album, to something truly unique with their fourth. They've become a lot more atmospheric, exploring more eerie soundscapes and stranger song structure.From all their albums, the most critically acclaimed is The Work Which Transforms God, and for good reason. It is one of the most haunting, atmospheric black metal albums I've ever listened to, but it's still got a good amount of more raw black metal in there to keep an element of variation. Definately worth a listen.

Dying Fetus - Killing On Adrenaline (1998)

Dying Fetus is a great deathgrind band from the USA. Their music is quite unique (well, at least until people started copying them...), they have very fast drums, shredding guitars with riffs that make you crazy, and vocals from the bullfrog style to lots of differnet screams. This is quite heavy, but also very groovy at times. Just listen to "Kill You Mother, Rape Your Dog" - the lyrics aren't those typical gore and mutilation stuff, in this song they're about record stores and pop bands, and the music is really groovy. But the whole album is great - when I got the discography from a friend, I listened to this album every day for two weeks.... yeah, it's That mighty. You'd better check it out, cos this is something awesome!

There are certainly no shortage of melodic death metal bands out there, though Finland has produced fewer than other countries (such as, obviously, Sweden). Mors Principium Est came together in 1999 and have released two albums, with the 2003 debut Inhumanity reviewed here. The band has been compared to fellow Finns such as Omnium Gatherum and Children Of Bodom, both valid reference points though MPE is at least trying not to clone the melodic death genre. Keyboards are using sparingly but effectively, giving the group a slightly darker tone to blend with the speedy riffing and typically harsh vocals. As with many bands, they are neither blatant copyists nor blindingly original, relegating them to up-and-coming status.

Psycroptic is a Tasmanian death metal band that formed in 1999, with their most recent album being The Scepter Of The Ancients, released in 2003. Scepter is a fine example of twisted, choppy, technical death metal, with frequently changing riffs and extremely tight musicianship. Matthew Chalk displays a fine range of extreme vocal styles, from the traditional low growls to blackish shrieks, thus avoiding the tendency of death vocalists to reduce every lyric to monotonic barking. There is the tendency to favor the riff over the song, as is common with technical bands like this, but there is enough variance in the everchanging riffs to overlook the relative lack of song identity. Psycroptic is one of the better technical death metal bands to emerge in some time.

Naysayers will surely dismiss the Absence’s approach on From Your Grave as indicative of an unseemly bid for mainstream acceptance, joining Cradle of Filth and Immortal as the Blink-182s and Sum 41s of once-extreme metal. And granted: the group is not as extreme as Cannibal Corpse. It hasn’t burned any churches, or even given any audience members concussions by pelting them with severed pig heads. But the commercial possibilities of melodic death metal—even stuff as listenable and downright pleasant as this—remain extremely limited, and the only real reason for a band to pursue it is sheer love of the genre. That love shows through on From Your Grave, and the Absence deserves credit for a solid, respectable debut.

PESTILENCE - Consuming Impulse (1989)

You might call this the "Reign In Blood" of Pestilence's catalogue. This is where they took the speed element that Slayer had perfected and did their own thing with it, resulting in what has now become an essential Thrash-classic! The riffs are anti-melodic, sharp and fast, as Pestilence was so skilled at doing. The production is the perfect balance of roughness and clarity, fitting the technical riffery like a glove. Each track is basically a Thrash Metal tour de force; fast and furious, with wild, chaotic leads that Pestilence had also become masters of, but Pestilence do it differently. Their lead-lines are much more wandering and altogether disturbing than the "millions-of-notes" soloing of King and Hanneman. This would also be the last album with Martin van Drunen, who would leave for Bolt Thrower. His vocals are the epitome of brutal. Listen to the plunging-and-soaring riff-mutations on "Chronic Infection" and you'll hear where Thrash Metal's roots came from, with some of the best vocals ever growled in Death/Thrash Metal! "Out Of The Body" basically helps to write the book on classic Thrash-riffing. My only slight complaint: not much variation between most songs, each is basically hack & slash all the way through. No one ever did it like Pestilence. This is just one of those albums that you NEED to own, my dear Metalhead... (Review by Gabe, www.metal-observer.com).

On the same day Gorgoroth's latest CD was released in North America, so was Sahg's debut. What's the connection? King Ov Hell, who just left Gorgoroth, is also a member of Sahg. (Jothunspor, another band King's a member of also released their CD that day). The two bands are musical oceans apart. Sahg's style is doom metal straight out of the Black Sabbath songbook. The vocals even sound a bit like Ozzy. But Sahg also incorporates some progressive influences amongst the doom. The songs have a great groove, and a vibe that's part retro, part modern. Doom and stoner metal fans will definitely want to check this one out.

DEMILICH - NESPITHE (1993)

Demilich hold true to the melodic tradition of Finnish metal by merging the heavy metal tradition of rich tonal space liberated by abstract conceptions of harmony with death metal, layering their ideas into songs where complexity silhouettes but does not illustrate an overall thematic space via postmodernist metastructuralism. Somehow I think Frank Zappa, young and into extreme metal, would have come up with something like this. There are brutal parts, of blasting and rhythmic intensity, while most of the rest runs through wild cyclical riffs and transitions into a confusing maze of tones that reassemble as an understanding in the head of the listener after the influence of time reducing musical input is removed. It is all guided by the unreal gutteral croaking of Antti Bowman, a visceral bloodthrust which keeps a counterpace to the liquid modulation of the music. (Review by anus.com/metal)
